Understanding what is revealed (and as important, what is hidden) in the financial reports of a public company is a challenge much too big to be fully addressed in any one book. People spend decades honing their skills. However, everybody needs to start somewhere, and this book is not a bad place. Lita Epstein walks us through the financial reports for Hasbro and Mattel, explaining important line items and comparing the numbers for the two companies. This approach allows her to explain the importance of each item, in addition to its meaning.

For the most part, the information here can be readily found in free sources online, but without the consistency in writing style and presentation, and perhaps without the simple examples. Epstein also editorializes a bit in later chapters about conflicts of interest on Wall Street, a valuable topic. The book might have benefitted from more material like this.

Lita Epstein has produced a thorough education of the subject, not just “reading’ financial reports but from a broad satellite perspective to street level, from overview to intricate detail of all elements of financial reports, not just income statements, balance sheets, and cash flows, and management’s notes (discussions and analysis). She educates each element of the financial reports, including accounting methods, straightforward and not so straightforward. She educates on the different types of business structures, different management methods of approaching reporting requirements, relevant tax considerations and governmental regulations.

As single figures from any of the three main parts of the report are of themselves potentially very misleading in an analysis, despite such widespread use, the focus falls upon combinations, relationships, and trends of and between the individual figures, within a single companies report as well as between companies of any given industry and between years.

It’s ratios and comparisons as found in part Three, “Analyzing the Numbers,” which I personally would find most useful in the long run, and use the more educational definitional portions as reference for more in depth comprehension.

Another part which I highly recommend is part 21, “Checking Out the Analyst – Corporation Connection.” It’s a very worthwhile heads up for investors.

It’s not light reading, but the entire work is an excellent educational source and very well worth the time and effort to take the opportunity to learn the subject from this excellent source

The Dummies series of books are well-known for their ability to make complex topics easy to understand for the lay person and Reading Financial Reports for Dummies is no exception. As someone who does this for a living, I was pleasantly surprised at how the author, Lita Epstein, breaks down the wall of mystery surrounding financial reporting. There are easy-to-understand, accurate explanations of the four major financial reports, a brief history (gives context), and how some of the more popular financial ratios are used and what they mean.

While this book isn’t going to make one a financial wizard, it will absolutely give someone new to financial reports a great basic understanding and insight into how to read financial reports and use the information provided to make wise investment decisions.
